AVID

What is AVID?
AVID is an academic, regularly scheduled every day class based on writing as a tool of learning, the inquiry method, and collaborative grouping and processing. The three main components of the program are 1) instruction in rigorous curricula, 2) collaborative study groups, and 3) motivational activities.

Who Are AVID Students?
AVID works with the mainstream student who is capable of completing a college preparatory curricular path but has not as yet been challenged or supported in this path.  Generally, AVID students are from groups under represented in college preparatory courses such as Honors and Advanced Placement (AP). They are often first generation high school diploma recipients and/or college attendees. They are enrolled in rigorous, academic classes and in the AVID class, where the students receive crucial support from the facilitator/tutors and the AVID teacher.  They become academically successful, self-confident and role models for other students in the school. They are proud to be in AVID.

1. Students must demonstrate academic potential by having a grade point average of 2.5 - 3.5.
2. Student must have average to high test scores and have passed, or are close to proficient, the math and reading MCA tests.
3. Students must have a desire to attend post-secondary educational options and the motivation to work hard for it.
4. AVID class is an every day class. It will take the place of Communications and one other elective.
5. Other considerations that are taken into account when applying for the AVID program are:
   1. first generation in family to attend college
   2. member of a group traditionally underrepresented in 4-year colleges
   3. from a low-income family
   4. special circumstances (i.e. single parent family, etc.)
