Approved adjustments seek to ease current and future crowding at Rosemount high and middle school
action is part of larger effort to address projected growth
The District 196 School Board on Monday unanimously approved recommended changes to high school, middle school and elementary school attendance areas to ease current and projected overcrowding at Rosemount High School and Rosemount Middle School by utilizing available space at other district schools.
The recommendations were shared with the community in October, revised based on input to include additional preference for families in the affected areas, and presented as new business at the Nov. 8 board meeting.
Changes approved by the board Dec. 13 take effect with the start of the 2022-23 school year and will be phased in to allow students living in the impacted areas the option to finish out the level at the school they are currently attending. Transportation will be provided through the 2023-24 school year during a two-year phase-in for middle school and through 2025-26 during a four-year phase-in for high school.
IMPORTANT: Families living in the affected areas will now be asked to make enrollment decisions for their middle school and high school aged children for the 2022-23 school year by the Jan. 5 deadline, which was extended from Dec. 15 this year only. Middle schools and high schools need enrollment information to communicate with their families about the course registration process for 2022-23, which will happen in January and February.
ONLY for families living in the areas involved in the attendance-area changes:
- Grades 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11 – Students currently attending a middle school or high school will continue to remain enrolled at their school in 2022-23 without taking any action. To attend their new attendance-area middle school or high school, families with students in these grades would need to complete the Intradistrict Student Transfer Application form [Español] [Soomaali] (502.4P) and submit it to the district’s Student Information Office by the Jan. 5 deadline.
- Grade 8 -- Students will be enrolled at their new attendance-area high school for 2022-23. To exercise their option to attend Rosemount High School, families of 8th grade students would need to complete the Intradistrict Student Transfer Application form [Español] [Soomaali] (502.4P) and submit it to Student Information by Jan. 5.
- Grade 5 – Students will be enrolled at their new attendance-area middle school for 2022-23. If a student qualifies for sibling or family preference and wants to attend their current attendance-area middle school, they must complete the Intradistrict Student Transfer Application form [Español] [Soomaali] (502.4P) and submit it to Student Information by Jan. 5.
The approved recommendations include sibling preference for students living in the affected areas to enroll at a school they would be attending at the same time as an older sibling and family preference for students with an older sibling who graduated or who will graduate from Rosemount High. Families with students currently in grades K-7 who do not have a sibling or family preference will be given preference in the intradistrict student transfer process based on enrollment and capacity at the school they are requesting to attend. Open enrollment requests from students living outside the district are due Jan. 15 and will be processed after intradistrict transfer requests.
The Intradistrict Student Transfer Application is a simple form that takes minutes to complete and can be submitted by email to kim.reis@district196.org, fax to 651-423-7787 or mail to: Student Information Supervisor, Independent School District 196, 3455 153rd St. W., Rosemount, MN 55068. Under Reason for Request, families living in the areas affected by these changes should check the box “Attendance-area adjustment options as authorized by the School Board.” There’s no need to explain the specific preference. Requests will be processed as they are received and will be accepted or denied based on eligibility and preference for families living in the affected areas only, as determined by members of the Student Information Office.
